A successful teaching paradigm includes many intangibles, and passion is at the top of the list.

Without passion, teachers can fail to inspire their students and, in some tragic cases, quell their thirst for knowledge. When a teacher is passionate about the subject, their enthusiasm can become contagious. Many children will lose interest in the topic without passion, especially when they realize their teacher is just going through the motions.

10 Ways to Teach with Passion

The list below will help you to teach with passion and encourage your students to tackle their studies with a high level of interest and curiosity.

1. Comfort

If you don’t have a naturally passionate outlook on a subject, find something about it that excites you. As a teacher, you may be called upon to teach a class outside your expertise. Take the time to explore the topic and find a hook that will draw in your students.

2. Life Lessons

Incorporate life lessons into the curriculum. There are many ways to take education outside the classroom; the more it’s done, the better. Don’t be afraid to get personal and help your pupils see the bigger picture.

3. Gage Students

Use your students’ interests as a springboard to deepen your own. Sometimes it will be your students who guide you. If you sense they bring a higher enthusiasm than your own, don’t be afraid to use that to your advantage.

4. Widen Lessons

Don’t forget to bring a few extras to your lessons. Take the time to tie your lesson plans to popular culture or current events, and show the kids how the subject affects many different areas of life.

5. Open-ended Discussion

Encourage an atmosphere of curiosity and questioning. Don’t shut down any questioning. Encourage open-ended discussion, especially between the students, that will deepen their overall interest.

6. Make it Fun

Don’t be afraid to bring in props and guest speakers. Your students will benefit when you have a few fun ideas up your sleeve. Guest speakers can give them an even more complete understanding of the subject and make it more real than something they’ve just read about in a book.

7. Practicality

Create some ties between classroom learning and real-world practicality. It may remain too abstract without giving them some applications of how they can someday use this knowledge. This is key, especially for middle schoolers still trying to understand how education translates.

  • How can they use this knowledge in ways outside of school?
  • What are some careers that rely on the mastery of this subject?
  • Who are some well-known leaders in this subject matter?

8. After-School Learning

Encourage your students to pursue further learning outside of the classroom. Give them a reading list, or suggest some movies that are related to the subject.

9. Create a Theme

Tie a few different subjects together to give the students a comprehensive overview. Creating an overarching theme makes it much easier for students to grasp esoteric concepts.

10. Passion

Bring energy into the classroom. You will feel more fulfilled when you approach your teaching with passion, and your students will likely learn more. Don’t be afraid to try new methods or venture outside the typical teaching box to increase the level of engagement that you and your students feel about the class!
