The movement to create an all -inclusive and integrated classroom for all students with learning differences is here. More educators are becoming aware of students that struggle with reading challenges, but might lack the expertise to help a child with dyslexia. More general education colleagues are learning how to help students with dyslexia. This is where I come in. I am an education specialist who provides intensive, intervention instruction using a systematic, structured literacy approach for secondary students. My students have goals of graduating high school, because they struggle in middle school and need more help. I tell my students that they need to graduate from college. I see the difference in my students behavior, social skills, and academics everyday. I am living my dream by being in this position.

What will the funds be used for
A whirlwind of changes has brought me to my dream job- an itinerant special education teacher specifically teaching students, diagnosed with language-based reading disabilities in the secondary school setting. My students need to dive deeper with early, foundation reading skills through a structured literacy approach. These are kids in middle school that excel in other subjects, but struggle with reading words and require teachers to increase wait time, provide other alternatives to demonstrate comprehension, need testing accommodations. The Wilson Reading System 4th edition is designed for students with dyslexia, who need intensive instruction in phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and phonemic awareness.

My students enter my "reading clinic" with hesitation, embarrassed about their reading struggles, and with low self-confidence. As the students begin to understand the alphabetic principle, manipulate phonemes, and read more fluently, their self-esteem improves dramatically. These students put their best foot forward in all of their assignments.
