I am an elementary education teacher of twenty first-graders in a public school in Kansas City. My students are predominately African-American with 100% of them receiving free breakfast and lunch. Our school is located in a high poverty neighborhood surrounded by crime and a lack of structured educational background. The majority of my students live in low-income housing and many others live in temporary housing shelters. Nevertheless, they are excited about learning and they come to school every day with high hopes, high expectations, and enthusiasm.
