The Three Steps to Thoughtful Action

Description

The purpose of this video-based lesson is to help the student understand how to increase their ability to be a thoughtful person. Based on the concept that opportunities to be thoughtful are regularly being presented to us, this activity helps the student tune in to these opportunities.

Doing so involves three steps:

1) AWARENESS: Noticing what is happening inside and outside of myself.

2) CONSIDERATION: Giving a situation careful thought:
- Can I do something about a situation I've noticed?
- Do I want to do something about it?
- Do I have the resources, the time, the energy?

3) ACTION: If I decide to move forward, I complete the thoughtful action by providing useful assistance.

I'll share examples of thoughtful actions and encourage the student to put these steps into practice in their own life.

Expertise

I'm uniquely qualified to teach classes on Social & Emotional Learning because I've dedicated my career to it. I envisioned and launched the Puget Sound Community School in 1994, building a model of education that nurtures a student's intrinsic motivation. Since then, I've created and taught a "kindness curriculum" that gained international attention, leading me to develop the online resource Kind Living and a program for The Compassion Games. My experience isn't limited to youth; I've also facilitated workshops for adults, officiated weddings, and led parent education events, all with the goal of helping people connect with themselves and others.
