About
We serve approximately 1,200 students in grades 9-12 in a lower income section in Gastonia, North Carolina. Our students often come to us with lower reading levels and lack of both in-school and out-of-school support. Very few have traveled outside of Gastonia, NC and one of my duties, if not the most important, as Career Academy Coordinator is to have conversations with students that lead to the development of an after-high school plan.
Currently, Hunter Huss High School is a low-performing school, having received a report card score of 'D" for three years consecutively and classified as Title I. All of our students receive free meals, breakfast and lunch. The minority enrollment in our school is 85%. While that information paints a dismal portrait of our school, our diverse group of students are inquisitive because the adults in this building are passionate about ensuring their successful future. It is the belief of the faculty here at Hunter Huss High School that we meet the requirements of being an educational institution economically, geographically, culturally, and environmentally challenged.
Please allow me to discuss an opportunity that would come to fruition with the financial assistance of your foundation. We are super excited to bring a broad array of experiences and resources to his phenomenal student body. One way we hope to accomplish this endeavor is to host a College and Career Fair in the Spring of 2027. Our community engagement with this event has been phenomenal in the past. The global goals of this event are to give our juniors and seniors the opportunity to explore career options, network with prospective employers, and exercise professional behavior.
Beginning in January, we ask our students to step out of their comfort zones and focus on their future after high school. In preparation for this event, each junior and senior will participate in workshops on Resume Preparation and References, How to Dress Professionally, and The Interview Process. These workshops will take place during regular school hours, 8:30am - 3:30pm. Our goal is for every 11th and 12th grader to have a working resume and understand the qualifications and skills needed to gain and sustain employment.
So that you understand how our College & Career Fair operates, I will offer you some specific information. Our guest vendors, from a variety of colleges and local businesses, will begin arriving at Hunter Huss High School at 8:00 am. It is our vision to host a minimum of 100 vendors from Gastonia and surrounding communities and colleges from in- and out-of-state.
There are numerous costs involved in successfully designing and hosting a College and Career Fair of this magnitude.
As a service to our participating vendors, we offer them a table, two chairs, breakfast, lunch, and a vendor packet containing several small appreciation gifts for attending. Below is an itemized list of costs associated with this Fair:
tables, chairs, and tablecloths (rented) - $1600.00
advertisement posters - $200.00
student engagement stickers - $250.00
breakfast (catered) - $1800.00
lunch (catered) - $2600.00
t-shirts (10 student ambassadors) - $200.00
fair decor (banners, balloons) $200.00
vendor packets (pen, thank you note, snack, and candy) - $300.00
We are grateful for any monetary assistance for our College and Career Fair, but are requesting $7150 in total for our event. Any size donation is greatly appreciated and your support, along with your company's information, will be prominently and proudly displayed at our College and Career Fair.
