# Pressing Forward: Bringing Professional Printmaking to Our Classroom
Printmaking is one of the most engaging and transformative art experiences students can have because it combines creativity, experimentation, craftsmanship, and problem-solving into one process. My students are eager to explore advanced printmaking techniques, but our classroom currently lacks one essential tool that would allow them to fully experience authentic printmaking: a professional printing press.
A printing press would completely transform our high school art classroom into a hands-on printmaking studio where students can create monoprints, collagraphs, linoleum block prints, drypoint etchings, and other layered printmaking processes using professional methods. Students would learn how artists transfer imagery through pressure, texture, layering, and ink while developing technical skills and creative confidence.
Currently, students create prints using improvised hand-printing methods. While these techniques are valuable introductions, having access to an actual press would allow students to produce stronger, clearer, and more detailed prints while experiencing the same process used by professional artists and college-level printmaking programs.
This project would provide students with opportunities to explore composition, texture, positive and negative space, layering, and visual storytelling through authentic studio experiences. Students would also learn perseverance and problem-solving as they experiment with pressure, ink application, and plate design to create original works of art.
Many of my students have limited access to advanced artistic tools and creative opportunities outside of school. A printing press would not only elevate the quality of student artwork, but also expose students to potential careers and pathways in graphic design, illustration, fine arts, fashion, and commercial printing.
The press would become a long-term investment for our school and benefit countless future students by allowing our art program to continue growing into a dynamic and innovative printmaking studio. Students would be able to participate in collaborative projects, gallery displays, critiques, and portfolio development while gaining experience with professional-level equipment.
By supporting this project, donors are helping students gain access to meaningful, hands-on artistic experiences that encourage creativity, experimentation, critical thinking, and personal expression. Most importantly, students will have the opportunity to see their ideas come to life through a process that is exciting, empowering, and unforgettable.
Thank you for supporting arts education and helping bring authentic printmaking experiences to our classroom.
