I teach year 1&2 Spanish, novice levels. I have always felt that sitting behind a desk and learning about a language was fascinating. When I began to use my language skills outside of the classroom however, I felt very different. I was afraid of what I could do (or couldn’t do, in my mind). As I began teaching, I had always felt like something was missing and realized that it was opportunities for my students to use the language in context. We moved to get rid of the desks so that we can move around and talk to each other and work in groups as the task requires. We also have incorporated more reading of authentic materials. The adaptation has been a challenge for some as it is new, but the results speak for themselves.
