About
After finishing up my bachelors degree, my older brother suggested I go back to school to get a credential in working with the blind. To be honest, I was intimidated and immediately dismissed the idea. Just after talking to him I checked the mailbox as I left the house. Lo and Behold, without soliciting any sort of information I received and opened a letter inviting me to an informational workshop at the local university to a graduate program in instruction for persons with visual impairments. That was the start of my journey in working with students who are blind in a public school setting.
My role as an Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Instructor includes working with students with a variety of visual impairments and diagnosis. O&M is part of the expanded core curriculum (ECC) designed specifically for blind students to have access to areas of need that are specific for visual impairments.
O&M instruction focuses on the skills the students need to access the school campus and their community, such as grocery stores and shopping centers, by learning to cross traffic light controlled intersections and take public transportation.
