About
My name is Jillian Gruber and I have been teaching for almost 4 years. I teach in a New York City public school for special needs students. I have exclusively taught students on the lower end of the autism spectrum. My students abilities have varied over the years, from students who cannot hold a pencil to students who do not know how to play with toys to students who can read and do math. I have had classes entirely comprised of non-verbal students who communicate only through gestures or picture symbols, and I have had classes of students who are able to verbalize what they want or need.
I love my students. I get to see them grow and flourish throughout the year and over the summer, as their special education program extends year round. For a child on the autism spectrum, what seems like a small accomplishment for the typical child can be a major step up in the game for an atypical student. Each year I have six students in my class, and I feel lucky about that because I get to develop a close bond with each of them.
