I currently teach at an inner city high poverty school. I use my personal money to buy supplies for my classroom as well as supplies my students may need for projects in other teacher's classrooms. As a special education teacher, I must look at the whole child and that includes what takes place in other classrooms. My students are my kids whether they are in my room at the moment or not. I have provided them with food because they were hungry more than one time. I have given them school supplies because they have asked their parents to buy them but either their parent can't afford them or the parent will not buy the supplies. I have provided toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and clothes. I do that because I provide for the whole child. I was fortunate to have parents willing to work more than one job to make sure I had what I needed but not everyone has that provided to them. If a child is worried about any of those things they can't focus on learning and that is why I spend my money on those things. In my mind that's part of teaching the whole child.
I know every student can learn and it's me goal to find each student's best way to learn. But, in order for them to learn I must be able to make sure to have all the supplies they need.
