I have taught for 20 years now. Moved classrooms several times only to end up in one with outdated furniture and an outdated classroom. Several parts of our school have been added and are relatively new, however much of the old building classrooms are outdated furniture and old plaster walls with school provided chairs with arm desks.
I purchased some tables that were once display tables however they have less that quality tops for the use of middle school students. I would like to replace the tops and add stools with backs for students to use. I have painted some for temporary use, however again they must hold up to middle school students and several have requested backs on the stools for comfort.
I am attempting to update furniture to make a more purposeful flexible seating options for my student to have area for group collaboration, independent work, small group teacher led area, and comfortable reading areas. I have implemented some of this the best way I can, however managing this with seats and stools with the need to accommodate my class numbers have proven messy at times.
Engagement has increased with the multi-level table areas, room to rotate stations and have collaboration areas have proven effective this year with the students I have been working with this year. I look forward to making it all even better and inviting for students.
