Mrs. Dorothy Thompson my fourth grade teacher made me fall in love with reading as she read Little House on the Prairie. This year was the first year of integration at my school. I still don't know until this day how I ended-up being the only African-American in my class, but Mrs. Thompson treated all of us the same as if it didn't matter. It really didn't because when she read Little House on the Prairie, I made a connection to my granddaddy and Sunday visits. I was transformed. I was Laura. That experience helped me to understand the power of books to help people to connect and to transcend differences to experience a common experience.
I became a teacher, I am so honored to be able to share the stories and information that makes us all realize we have more than can bring us together than what divides us.
