My high school has had over 238 newcomer students arrive just in the past 2 years. These students speak a multitude of languages, including Dari, Arabic, Turkish, Russian, Ukrainian, Spanish, and many more! At a title I school of around 1300 students, asylee and refugee students make up a significant proportion of our student body, yet the funding and support fall woefully short of their needs. Quite often, students arrive late into the school year and don't have the opportunity to adjust, acquire English language proficiency, or adjust to the culture shock. These students too frequently become overwhelmed, develop a discomfort with the school environment, and "check out" before they have an adequate opportunity to invest in their own educational success.
To combat this issue, I would like to get a small set of classroom tablets, which they can use to translate in real time, type in their own language (especially Dari, Arabic, Ukrainian, and Russian with completely different alphabets), and simply get accustomed to using technology in school. I would also like to purchase more books in their home language to help them continue developing academic fluency without the barrier of learning a new language holding them back. Reading popular young adult novels (such as Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Twilight, Divergent, Percy Jackson, Chronicles of Narnia, Dune, etc) in their native language can be a wonderful way for students to adapt to American culture, find common interests with their peers, and continue to more rigorously build their academic skills while they work on English fluency.
