I started my teaching career in 2011 after working more than fourteen years at Texas A&M International University. I was a coordinator and director of various grant programs there at the university that worked with low income high school youth. I began teaching high school students in my third year of teaching. I am currently teaching at my alma-matter. United South High School is home to a wonderful group of students and over 85% are deemed low socio-economic and our population is 98% predominately Hispanic. There are many students with different needs that I serve within my classroom. I have "at-risk" students, English Language Learners, migrant students, special needs and 504 students. There are various needs and I try to fulfill these to the best of my ability through personal funds, donations from friends and other gracious donors/grants. I have also created a student pantry to assist those students experiencing food insecurity. The need for funding especially in my department of Foreign Languages, is crucial as most content areas are federally funded, Foreign Languages are seen as electives courses despite of the fact that it has been proven that learning a second language, improves our cognitive skills. Needs in my department range from basic supplies to educational materials to flexible seating for special needs students in our classrooms.
