Description
As you introduce the 50 states in groups throughout the school year, it saves so much time to have a consistent routine. This routine is perfect for fifth graders learning the states. Students work in small groups around the states you are currently studying to complete research that they can then present to the class. Students enjoy the mix of discovery and collaboration with options embedded for students who prefer to show their learning visually. This frees you up to work with individual students or (ssshhhh) catch up on other things that need doing in the classroom for a few moments while they are actively engaging in a routine that they have down.
Generally my students take two class periods to complete the research working in teams of four. Pairs or triads would need more time. Then we spend an additional social studies period on each group presenting what they have learned. The presentations are lower stakes presenting practice for them since they are presenting in a group.
Students will be prompted to research:
Basic Facts
Geography
Climate
Politics
State Flag
Unique Facts
You may choose to assign students to illustrate a state map and state flag.
Includes planning document for group work to make this easy to assign and a list of recommended online resources if your classroom or school library don't have relevant resources.
This can also be used for students to complete a complete state on their own in preparation for state research reports or your school's states fair if that is your tradition.
