Excerpt

Gypsy is the name we use to refer to a culture that once lived in northern India. However, this population finds that word derogatory or hurtful. Instead, they prefer the names Roma and Romani. History reveals they came to Europe over one thousand years ago. Homeless, they roamed the frontier, the wheels of their wagons rolling from village to village. Today, Europe's leaders do not know their exact number. Yet, they estimate that around twelve million dwell on the continent. Although their lives are challenging, they inspire us with their sense of mystery and joy of living.

Rationale for Using this Resource

The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) explains why teaching vocabulary within grade-level context is important. "Because students who know many words can comprehend what they read, they continue to increase their vocabularies and content knowledge through reading. The opposite holds true for students with limited vocabularies..." (Jane L. Dodd)
