Unit Description: Exploring Freedom and Identity in A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen

This unit delves into the complexities of A Doll's House, a groundbreaking play by Henrik Ibsen, which explores themes of personal freedom, gender roles, societal expectations, and self-discovery. Through a close reading of the text, students will engage in critical discussions, literary analysis, and creative activities to explore the nuanced characters, especially Nora, who challenges the constraints of her marriage and society. By analyzing Ibsen's portrayal of the domestic sphere, power dynamics, and the consequences of self-liberation, students will gain insight into the timeless conflict between personal desire and societal pressures.

Throughout the unit, students will explore essential questions such as: How do societal norms shape individual identity? How does A Doll's House critique marriage and gender roles in the 19th century? What does Nora's decision at the end of the play reveal about her character and the limitations placed on women? By engaging with these questions and the play's multifaceted characters, students will sharpen their skills in literary analysis, critical thinking, and reflective writing.

In addition to reading and analyzing the text, students will engage in collaborative projects, debates, and creative activities that encourage them to think critically about the relevance of A Doll's House in the context of contemporary gender and societal issues. The unit culminates in a final assessment that challenges students to synthesize their understanding of the play's themes and characters and apply them to modern-day contexts, encouraging personal reflection on identity, freedom, and the dynamics of relationships.

This unit will empower students to reflect on their own beliefs and values while deepening their understanding of one of the most important works in modern drama.
