What we don't teach students: How to Break Up. Often, students will stay in unfulfilling dating relationships because they don't know HOW to breakup, or they attempt to breakup, but do so in ways that cause themselves and their partners greater pain than necessary. This short, hour to hour and a half curriculum teaches students HOW to breakup in the most respectful way possible. Included is seven two person, two-part scripts for students to practice the "art of breaking up." Scripts provide students with an opportunity to practice using "I messages", reiteration, setting boundaries, remaining respectful and establishing what they will tell family and friends about the breakup. Each script has a scene A and scene B. Scene A has one individual giving up their personal power in the break-up while Scene B has that same person claiming their personal power in the same break-up. Scripts cover individual's using the threat of a break-up to manipulate their partner into doing things they don't want, into restricting their own behaviors to meet someone else's rules, and one script has a partner threatening self-harm in an attempt to prevent the break-up. Also included is a student handout: Claiming Your Personal Power, a student brochure: How to Break Up: A Guide for the Dating Adolescent; A student study guide with thought questions for discussion or written work; and an Instructor's Guide.
