Description

This is a great text to focus on to get to know your students and for your students to get to know their classmates either at the beginning of the year for 'start up' or any time throughout the year really.

Here are 10 different activities relating to: literacy, friendship, personal identity and 'getting to know you'.

Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley by Aaron Blabey Friendship and All About Me.

“A delightfully uplifting tale about self-belief, courage – and above all- the power of friendship”

This has links to the Victorian Curriculum and Australian Curriculum of Personal and Social Capability for Foundation to Level 2.

What’s included:

- Character Venn Diagram – Compare and Contrast Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley either shared, partnered or independently

-Character Analysis – Similar to a PMI - Strength, Weakness and Admire for Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley

- Text to Self Connections - Similar to a PMI - Strength, Weakness and Admire for Pearl Barley, Charlie Parsley and your student

- ‘This is Me’ identity poster – Students can colour in Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley characteristics they relate to and then add their own traits in the empty boxes. They can then create their own self portrait.
(perhaps with pastel or a similar medium to those used in the text's illustrations - interestingly also by Aaron Blabey)

- Friendship Venn Diagram – Compare and Contrast two classmates

- Friendship poster or page – together with the Venn Diagram or as a stand-alone two students can fill in the gaps to describe the differences between themselves. This can then be displayed within the classroom or turned into a class book.

- What Makes Me a Good Friend - You can have your students fill this in about themselves by cutting and pasting five of the traits of a good friend. Alternatively you could have students nominate and ‘award’ other students the traits of a good friend as a way of spreading kindness and giving compliments

- Family Venn Diagram – Compare and Contrast a student with a chosen family member e.g. sibling

- Write your own – Students can write and illustrate their own version of Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley comparing themselves with a family member

Pick one or pick them all!
