Description

This lesson was created for Anthony Doerr's All the Light We Cannot See. Students complete several literary analysis activities for a scene from Part 9, May 1944 (pages 411-413). The skills practiced include writing a structured literary analysis paragraph and gathering textual evidence to support one's claims. This is a very tense and captivating scene where Werner sees Marie-Laure for the first time and mesmerized, can't help but follow her to learn more about her. My students enjoyed this passage because Doerr builds tension and suspense for the audience as our two main characters nearly meet in the streets of Saint-Malo. Neither character know that they are being watched from a nearby bench by Von Rumple. There is certainly a lot of excitement in this passage.

After reading the included close reading, students answer literary analysis questions where they practice analyzing how Doerr uses imagery and mood to create meaning. Students analyze the characters' emotions by gathering textual evidence to support their claims. Students also write a literary analysis paragraph to determine the mood of the passage and its intended effect. Included in the paragraph response are sentence starters to support students with the writing process.

The lesson will take 1-2 class periods to complete depending on your student population. This assignment can be assigned as a class assignment, homework, or function as a ready to teach sub plan.
