Description

This lesson was created for part 3 1940 (Pages 191-195) of Anthony Doerr's All the Light We Cannot See. Students complete a close reading of the scene where Frederick is beaten for being the 'weakest" boy at the boarding school. Students analyze the scene to gain better insight into how the boarding school is emotionally impacting each of the characters. Students practice the skills of quote analysis, analyzing characterization, interpreting symbolism, and determining theme. This scene will spark engaging classroom discussion, because students feel tremendous compassion for both Werner and Frederick during this scene. They gain better insight into how challenging it must have been for teens to have lived through this time period.

The structure of this assignment is as follows: students closely review the passage, then they complete a vocabulary activity to gain a better understanding of the challenging words within the passage. After, students answer literary analysis questions to gain a deeper understanding of Doerr's writing. Within the assignment, students also complete two literary analysis paragraph responses. Questions move beyond comprehension and instead provide students the opportunity to analyze for the deeper meaning. This lesson will take 1-2 days to complete.

All documents were made on Google Docs., are editable to fit your classroom needs, and are compatible with Google Classroom. This assignment was intended to be completed digitally, but you can print this out as a packet and have students complete the questions on a separate sheet of paper if this better suits your classroom needs.
