Description

Get your students excited to begin reading Anthony Doerr's All the Light We Cannot See with these three anticipatory activities. First, students complete a search and study activity to learn about more about the author. Students read an article about Doerr and then complete research about his personal life. Afterwards, students complete two activities to build background and learn about the historical context of the novel. These activities include a short video describing the purpose of leaflets and their use during World War 2. These lessons prepare your students for the opening scenes of the novel where leaflets are introduced. My students found the leaflets lesson interesting because they had never heard of them before. Students also watch a short video about the D-Day Invasion and learn about what was occurring on August 7, 1944 since this is where the story begins.

All documents were made on Google Docs. and are compatible with Google Classroom. The assignment was intended to be completed digitally, but you can print out the packet and have students complete the questions on a separate sheet of paper if this better aligns with your classroom needs.

Included with this purchase:
-Digital Assignment with three lessons and all necessary weblinks
-Grading Rubric
-Answer Key
