Description
These two lessons were created for Anthony Doerr's All the Light We Cannot See. Students complete a close reading assignment for a scene from Part 9, May 9 1944 (pages 406-407). This is a pivotal scene in the novel when Werner makes the conscious choice to stop complying with what is being asked of him as a soldier. For the close reading, students focus on analyzing the figurative language and complete analysis questions to gain a deeper understanding of the passage. The close reading leads students into the second portion of this assignment, a structured paragraph writing assignment. Included is a paragraph outline with sentence starters to support students with the writing process. For this writing, students focus on the ways that Werner has evolved as a character since the start of the novel. Students will use two pieces of evidence from the close reading to support their reasoning. When they finish, there is a final draft outline where students format their writing into MLA format. This is a great lesson to teach paragraph writing or it can be used as a formal writing assessment. My students really enjoyed these two lessons, because they love Frederick and this is a scene where Frederick is finally acknowledged for the heroic character that he is.
