Description

This is a two part lesson for Anthony Doerr's All the Light We Cannot See. Students complete a close reading activity and structured paragraph writing for a scene from Part 7, August 1942 (pages 359-360). First, students read a passage from the novel and answer analysis questions to better understand the scene and the author's purpose. In this scene, Marie-Laure and her great-uncle Etienne discuss the moral dilemma that they are in by participating in their secret resistance against the Nazis.

After completing the close-reading and questions, students write a structured literary analysis paragraph where they analyze the motivation of the characters and the moral dilemma they face. Students will incorporate two pieces of evidence into their paragraph from the close reading. This assignment includes a step-by-step paragraph writing outline with sentence starters to support student of all learning levels with the paragraph writing process. As well, this lesson comes with a reading questions rubric and a paragraph writing rubric. This is a great lesson to use as a formative writing assessment.

This assignment will take 1-2 class periods to complete depending on your student population. This assignment can be assigned as a class assignment, homework, writing assessment, or it can function as a ready to implement sub plan.
