➥ About The Ball & Ring Demonstration:

This classic demo consists of a metal ball that just fits through a metal ring at room temperature. When the ball is heated, it expands, and no longer fits through the ring. This process clearly demonstrates how solids change in volume with changes in temperature, with no change to the mass.

The Ball and Ring Apparatus is also a low-cost investment that can be used year after year. At The Steam Queen, we've been using this demo since 2010, and it's a hit every time. Our Ball and Ring Lab Pack includes everything you need to bring this challenging concept to life for your students.


➥ Lab Guide:

The lab guide is packed with options, including differentiated activities for testing the effect of thermal energy on both the mass and volume of a solid, or just the volume.
The materials section of our lab guide includes options for traditional set-up with a gas line and Bunsen burner or a butane tank and nozzle set-up, making connections between energy use and flow in both set-ups.


➥ CER Extension:

Our set includes a guided CER (Claim-Evidence-Reasoning) argument scaffolded set, and sentence starters that make it easy for students to connect their observations to scientific concepts and develop their argument writing skills.

We also provide a graphic organizer, rubric, and 3 versatile supporting infographics illustrating the parts of a CER, sentence starters, and a text annotation guide set that can be used as classroom displays, digital notes, or student notebook inserts for any CERs students write in the future.


➥ Article & Question Set:

To further support learning, our article and question set helps students make connections between thermal expansion and contraction and examples they might encounter in their everyday lives, such as wooden doors, soda bottles, and sidewalk squares.

We focus on the law of conservation of mass and include an additional article that explains the unusual property of water to expand as it freezes, where most matter contracts under this condition.
