Description
Upper Elementary students still love picture books and Black History Month is a wonderful time to use them in the classroom. As teachers we know this, but making sure students have support in doing grade-level thinking with the books can be time consuming. These no-prep worksheets will guide students through thinking more deeply about Jacqueline Woodson's The Other Side.
The Other Side is a wonderful book about acceptance, stepping out of one’s comfort zone, and forging friendships that society may not support. Save even more time and money by purchasing it as part of the Diverse Mentor Texts Bundle.
These activities will support students with a scaffolded approach to key reading skills.
Activities Included:
Seed to Theme: This worksheet introduces an effective strategy for students to move beyond identifying a topic to identifying a theme and then prompts students to write a paragraph that supports their thinking with evidence.
Identifying Theme: This page helps students to use skills they should be strong with (problem/resolution) to build on in identifying a theme. This can work for students at all levels.
Character Inferences: This activity provides specific prompts to help students practice critically thinking about characters to make inferences.
Response Activity: These reflection questions are particularly aligned to practice with the Historic Fiction genre
Save more money and time by purchasing this book as a part of a bundle of great picture books for Black History month.
