Description

Upper Elementary students still love picture books and Black History Month is a wonderful time to use them in the classroom.Just because they are picture books doesn't mean they are just about celebrating Black History, they are also an opportunity to go into literature reading skills at a grade level. These no-prep worksheets will guide students through thinking more deeply about Faith Ringgold's Tar Beach.

Tar Beach is a wonderful book about hope, dreams and family. It is a great read aloud as a part of Black History Month or any time. There are also wonderful art tie-ins.

These activities will support students with a scaffolded approach to key reading skills. Save even more time and money by purchasing it as part of the Diverse Mentor Texts Bundle.

Texts are not included

Activities Included:

Seed to Theme: This worksheet introduced an effective strategy for students to move beyond identifying a topic to identifying a theme and then prompts students to write a paragraph that supports their thinking with evidence.
Inferences: This activity provides specific prompts to help students practice critically thinking about their reading to make inferences.
Response Activity: This writing prompt facilitates making text to self connections and can be a great connector activity in the classroom.
Comparison Activity: This is great for your gifted students to independently read a second text (The People Could Fly is widely available, it is NOT included here) and make connections. I offer this activity as a partner activity to support growth in conversation about text as well.
Save more money and time by purchasing this book as a part of a bundle of great picture books for Black History month.
