Description
he objective of chromatography is to separate the various substances that make up a mixture. The applications range from a simple verification of the purity of a given compound to the quantitative determination of the components of a mixture
This lab is an intro to chromatography which can be used both in chemistry and forensics. The directions are easy for all students to follow. Also included is a reading to help explain the lab.
MATERIALS
Scissors
Pencil
Pens (black, one per student)
Paper towel, chromatography paper coffee filter chromatography paper Litmus paper strips (or 1 in. by 4 in. pieces of thick paper towel strips)
Rubber band or piece of tape, a small container such as a plastic or glass cup, and some water.
White vinegar, rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol), salt water, fingernail polish remover (acetone), and ammonia.
This lab also contains a section in which students will explore their own different solutions to see which will separate colors the best
