Description

When giving new teachers advice, the first thing I tell them is to set standards form the beginning. Let students know exactly what you expect from them and make sure they understand the class rules. Teaching your students the classroom rules is an effective way to ensure good classroom management. Simply hanging rules on the wall and reading them the first week of school is not enough. Rules should be authentic, realistic, and simple. Creating too many becomes confusing and not much fun to teach or enforce. When teaching middle school, keep in mind that students are receiving rules from all their teachers, which can be overwhelming and difficult to remember.

The best way to use these pre-made rules is to:

•laminate the individual posters

•create a wall for class rules, procedures, and expectations

•use the decorative, colored posters to hang on the wall you created.

•use the black and white worksheets as an activity during the first few weeks of school, giving students some active participation. Encourage students to discuss the rules in groups while answering the questions. Each group can be responsible for a rule, or students can each be responsible for a rule and share with their group. Students can then share whole class.

•quiz students on the rules. My first quiz covers the syllabus. Not only does it help student learn the classroom requirements and expectations, but it includes class rules. It also previews what studying and quizzes look like in my class.
