***This resource is also included in Google Slides! Text boxes have already been created to make it easier for you and your students! It's super helpful for students who are not that familiar with how to use Google Slides or need the extra assistance.

Many students struggle with effective communication and this may be because either they are more comfortable texting and using technology than speaking face to face, they have few adult role models to show them how to be good listeners and have productive, healthy conversations, they have speech or other communication disorders that may impede their ability to speak and listen well, and/or because they have not been taught how to effectively communicate. Teaching young people how to communicate effectively can help them maintain healthy relationships, resolve conflicts peacefully, excel in school, and eventually get and keep jobs.

This resource features 40 REAL LIFE, HIGHLY RELEVANT scenarios that provides students opportunities to practice effective communication in difficult situations despite feelings of anger, hurt, betrayal, insecurity, etc. These scenarios provide students with opportunities to discuss, understand, and role play the variety of effective ways to communicate their thoughts and feelings in a respectful, mature manner and solve problems. It is a great way for students to practice "filtering their thoughts"!

The Scenario Task Cards and Worksheets include FOUR scenarios for EACH of the following TEN topics:

☆ Showing Empathy
☆ Minimizing Blame
☆ Responding to Criticism
☆ Social Filters
☆ Maintaining Self-Control
☆ Negotiating a Compromise
☆ Offering Good Advice
☆ Words of Encouragement
☆ Respectfully Disagreeing
☆ Being the "Bigger" Person

▶️ 40 Scenario Task Cards (COLORED and B&W – with and without GRAPHICS)

✅ Each Task Card includes one scenario followed by a question unique to the scenario/situation.

✅ There are two sets of Task Cards - One set includes a graphic/image on the task card and one set does not include an image/graphic.

✅ These Scenario Task Cards can be used as part of a larger lesson, in guided small groups, whole-class discussions, partner discussion before sharing out with the larger group or class, or even one-on-one with a teacher, guidance counselor, or parent/guardian! These four different Task Card variations contain the same scenarios.

✅ You can print the Task Cards out on gloss paper or regular paper and laminate. You may also organize them in a binder ring.

How/When To Use the Scenario Task Cards
✅ Role-Playing: Students can collaborate in pairs or groups to act out a variety of scenarios and demonstrate appropriate responses. Role-playing activities can also be used to demonstrate how to appropriately handle or navigate difficult situations through effective communication. Students can practice and learn the variety of ways they can handle situations that test their ability to filter their thoughts, respond maturely, and communicate effectively. This activity can ultimately improve confidence, communication, and assertiveness skills.

✅ Icebreaker: This can be a great way to start a meeting, training session, or team-building activity. It’s also a great way to get students to get to know each other and buy into the purpose of an upcoming activity or lesson.

✅ Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes then perform the skits for the class.

✅ Writing Response: Students can be given a scenario to read and then write their responses. Students can switch papers with a partner who then reads their responses and determines whether they agree/disagree with their responses/approaches to these real-life scenarios/situations. They can evaluate whether their approaches to solving problems (despite feelings of anger) is appropriate or inappropriate and offer other possible solutions and/or suggestions on how to best communicate your way through difficult situations.

✅ Discussion: Students can discuss the Scenario Task Cards in groups or whole class. They can discuss things like “How can you communicate your feelings without hurting the listener’s feelings?", “How can you effectively communicate your thoughts in a mature manner?”, “How can you filter your thoughts . . .,” etc.

▶️ 40 Scenario Worksheets (same scenarios in the Task Cards)

✅ This resource also includes 40 Scenario WORKSHEETS with lines, so students can write their responses. These worksheets contain the same scenarios in the Task Cards. It's a great opportunity for students to demonstrate how they would effectively communicate with others in difficult situations.

✅ Print and Digital Worksheets (PDF and Google Slides)

✅ These worksheets are great for “Quick Writes,” Do Now activities, Formative Assessments, or can simply be used as part of a larger lesson or discussion!

▶️ List of Scenarios (Easy Access for Teachers – 5 pages)
Also included is a 5-page complete LIST OF SCENARIOS to allow easier access for teachers to read and select scenarios to work with. These are the same scenarios listed in the Task Cards!
