Description

Students practice descriptive writing that includes dialogue, setting, conflict, and characterization through these "scene starters." If your students crave choice, these 20 task cards provide fun writing prompts by clicking a number or rolling the dice.

In this activity, students are asked to write a "scene" not a story. They DROP their reader into a moment using descriptive and vivid sensory details along with dialogue. The rules help them create strong, unique pieces of writing!

There are also options for you to use these as physical task cards or to push out digitally as an interactive slide.

✽ HOW TO USE THE PRINT VERSION

For the print version, laminate them to keep year after year. I suggest putting out 4 cards at a time, face down. Numbers are also included to paste to the backs before laminating. The student rolls the dice to determine which card they will write about. Writing response worksheets are provided. Share out their wonderfully wacky scenes!

✽ HOW TO USE THE GOOGLE SLIDES VERSION

Assign this through Google Classroom, or send them the link. Change the mode to "present" so they can't see the slide previews on the side. To do this, simply replace the word "edit" after the last backslash in the url with the word: present.

Here's a quick video, if you need help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2FeoUpetqI

Students read the directions, then pick any number between 1 and 20. They click on the number and it will take them directly to that prompt. If they click on that slide, it will redirect them back to the directions if they need to go over them again. Students record their response on the writing response worksheet. Share out!

✪Why this will help:

❤ Your students will LOVE these wacky prompts and totally pull a fist-pump when it's time to do centers!

❤ All directions are provided, so they can complete this independently while you work with small groups.

❤ They learn how to make a scene cinematic, vivid, enticing!

There are enough cards that you can rotate through them to last for a month or more!
