Description
Spread awareness to your students about the impact that deforestation is having on our planet with this inspiring group activity. This activity will take 2-3 days to complete in your classroom and was created for a high school or middle school English classroom in mind.
During this lesson, students listen to a powerful performance of a poem that highlights the effects of deforestation. After, in their groups, students are assigned a section of the poem and work together to discuss and answer analysis questions about their section. Students practice the skills of closely reviewing a text, analyzing the author's use of literary devices, determining the author's argument and the effectiveness of their argument, and much more. As well, students analyze the author's use of literary devices such as similes, metaphors, extended metaphors, imagery, juxtaposition, rhyme, allusion, tone, repetition, etc.
Students love the group work portion of this lesson, because they are given autonomy over their learning. Further, they enjoy the small group and whole class discussion because this time allows them to have meaningful discussions about human impact on the environment.
For the second portion of the activity, students complete several research tasks to learn more about the content discussed in the poem. All necessary links are provided within the document. During this activity, students learn about ways that they can get involved to support deforestation efforts. As well, they complete a carbon footprint activity that allows them to see how they impact our world as an individual. During this second lesson, students are also provided the opportunity to choose an environmental topic to learn more about. Students conduct research and complete a write-up that summarizes the current issue and identifies solutions for solving the issue. Students have rich discussions with their peers about what they learned about their environmental issues.
This digital lesson was created on Google Docs. and is compatible with Google Classroom. You can print this lesson out and have students complete it by hand as well. You would still need to provide students with the links embedded in the document.
I find a lot of value in discussing important environmental issues in my ELA classrooms, because students find these topics fascinating and they learn about their impact on the environment which builds of their own significant role in making this world a better place. These lessons empower students to become more thoughtful global citizens. :)
