Description
Students will be given a recipe for Elfie's Hot Cocoa that serves 24 Elves. After finding the new calculations, students will design a poster to display their new recipe.
However, students are asked to re-write the recipe (which includes fractions and mixed numbers) for a different amount of servings. Therefore, they will need to divide (if less Elves than the original recipe) or multiply (if greater number of Elves than the original recipe).
Advanced students could re-write the recipe for 18 or 36 Elves which means they will need to divide and multiply.
This is a great way to review multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers as well as simplifying fractions, improper fractions, and cross-simplifying.
Included in this Product:
• Teacher Directions
• Original Recipe for 24 Elves
• Elfie's Hot Cocoa Recording Sheet for students
• 8 Answer Keys (1 of each: 6, 8, 12, 18, 36, 48, 72, and 96 servings)
• Sample Student notes for Multiplying fractions and mixed numbers
• Sample Student notes for Dividing fractions and mixed numbers
• Scoring sheet for poster
• Photos of student engagement
• Examples of student made posters
The sample Student Notes can be printed and posted in a Math Center, included in Substitute Teacher Plans, or for students who may have missed your original lesson.
Differentiation:
For groups needing a challenge, they could be asked to re-write the recipe for 18 or 36 Elves - they will need to divide and multiply the original ingredients. Struggling students, could use repeated addition instead of multiplication.
