Description
Teach the art of rhetoric with this bundle of activities. Within this unit, students analyze a series of engaging speeches and practice identifying ethos, pathos, and logos as well as other rhetorical strategies within each speech. Many of the lessons are collaborative, such as the station rotation activities. My students love working in groups to analyze the various speeches in this unit, and the stations make the activities fun!
ACTIVITES...
The included slideshow reviews ethos, pathos and logos while students take notes on a note-taking doc. After, students complete the first activity where they review a short and engaging Ted Talk in order to interpret the techniques and rhetorical strategies used by the speaker. Next, students dive deeper into the Ted Talk transcript by completing a collaborative station rotation activity in groups.
For the next lesson, students learn several rhetorical strategies such as anaphora, anecdote, rhetorical question and parallel structure. Students take notes and practice creating examples of each using the slideshow and note-taking guide to support them through the process.
Next, students review a National Convention Speech and apply what they learn about rhetorical strategies from the previous lesson to their speech transcript. Students compete a partner annotating activity to analyze the appeals and strategies found in the speech.
After this activity, students complete another station rotation to further analyze the convention speech with new groupmates.
The next 2 activities includes two short and engaging Ted Talks. Students complete different practice activities with these speeches to further develop their skills with analyzing and interpreting each author's use of ethos pathos and logos as well as their use of rhetorical strategies. By the end of these activities, your students will be masters at rhetorical analysis! I enjoy these activities because students are guided to share their findings in group discussions.
