Description
I created this ethos pathos logos worksheet scavenger hunt activity so that my students could practice reviewing Aristotle's three rhetorical appeals outside of our English classroom. This is a great ethos pathos logos activity to assign for homework since students will be doing most of the activity outside of the classroom. This is ideal for middle or high school students who are learning to differentiate between ethos pathos and logos.
During this ethos pathos logos activity, students are asked to track the 3 appeals used by their teachers, peers, friends, and families, and do so on a structured printout ethos pathos logos worksheet. Students must gather two examples of appeals to ethos, pathos, or logos from each class period (outside of your class period), as well as two appeals they hear during lunch, while at home, and/or during sports practice/after-school activities. They will track these appeals over the course of- 1-2 weeks.
The last step of this ethos pathos logos worksheet is for students to complete a written debrief where they reflect on their findings, followed up with an in-classroom discussion where students are asked to share their new insights and overall experience from this scavenger hunt activity.
This is a fun ethos pathos logos activity for students and each of my class periods report having enjoyed the experience. They even shared that they were more engaged in other classes because they were intently listening for ethos pathos and logos. ;) This ethos pathos logos worksheet is a great way to get your students to practice identifying ethos, pathos, and logos in their everyday lives. It helps them make the connection that rhetorical appeals exist all around us!

Students complete this portion at the end of the two weeks and use their rationale to support them during the reflective class discussion day.
-Grading Rubric: Intentionally designed to streamline the grading process and save you time, while also providing students with quality feedback.
*All lesson materials were created on Google Slides and Google Docs. Documents are printer-ready but can be completed digitally via Google Classroom as well.
