Since most students use cell phones to text with family, friends, and classmates, they are already familiar with text messaging. Why not engage them in learning figurative language and the skill of 'reading between the lines' in a way that aligns with their interests? These activities are designed to capture their attention and ensure active participation from every student!
✅ This resource includes the following types of figurative language: Simile, Metaphor, Hyperbole, Personification, and Idiom. It features 10 text message conversations presented in three different formats, designed to support differentiation in your classroom and meet students at their individual learning levels.
✅ Students will read the text message conversation and identify two examples of figurative language. Next, they will determine the types of figurative language used, such as simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, onomatopoeia, or idiom. Finally, they will explain the meanings of the figurative language examples.
► Worksheet #1: This worksheet variation includes directions that do not provide students with the figurative language types to choose from (Simile, Metaphor, Hyperbole, Idiom, Personification). Students will independently identify figurative language examples and their types. This worksheet is designed for higher-level students.
► Worksheet #2: This worksheet variation includes directions that provide students with the figurative language types to choose from (Simile, Metaphor, Hyperbole, Idiom, Personification). Students are offered some guidance by having the options of different figurative language types presented to them. This worksheet is suitable for middle-level students.
► Worksheet #3: This worksheet variation provides students with the figurative language types to choose from (Simile, Metaphor, Hyperbole, Idiom, Personification) as well as their meanings. The worksheet includes a section that defines these figurative language types for students, offering more guidance. It is designed for lower-level students.
❗❗ Please note that all three differentiated worksheets feature the exact same set of 10 text message conversations.
❤️ This resource is incredibly beneficial, especially for struggling readers and lower-level students with shorter attention spans, making it easier for them to stay engaged compared to longer texts.
❤️ The Figurative Language Text Messaging Worksheets cover age-appropriate topics that are highly relevant, familiar, and enjoyable! Students will easily relate to the individuals involved in these text conversations.
❤️ You can integrate these Figurative Language Text Message Conversation Worksheets into various parts of your lesson, including Mini Lessons, Guided Practice, Independent Work, Formative Assessment, Pair or Groupwork activities, small groups, and even as homework or for extra practice!
