Description
Looking for a good way to teach the basic vocabulary for the concepts of force and motion? This resource includes vocabulary cards, memory cards, & an application activity on the playground.
1. Introduce the words with the 21 force and motion vocabulary cards that include definitions and pictures:
motion
force
speed
push
pull friction
balanced forces
kinetic energy
gravity
predict
potential energy
position
unbalanced force
inertia
observe
record
balanced forces
Sir Isaac Newton
Newton's 1st Law
Newton's 2nd Law
Newton's 3rd Law
2. In groups, students play a "concentration style" game where they match words and definitions. I use these in a center after introducing the words. Each team of 2-4 gets a set of cards and lays them face down on the table. They take turns turning them over two cards at a time to find a match between the words and the definitions.
3. Students then go out to the playground for a force and motion application activity. They locate examples of force and motion concepts. Using the sheets provided, they draw pictures and explain the examples.
push
pull
balanced forces
unbalanced forces
kinetic energy
potential energy
My students love this activity and get really excited when they can identify examples of these concepts in their world.
