Description
Why STEM Building?
Block play is especially good for spatial learning because it provides opportunities for kids to move and arrange objects and see what happens. Each tower that rises and falls is an experiment in how things in the physical world relate to each other.
Researchers are finding that understanding spatial vocabulary - words like 'above," 'below," 'next to," 'inside," 'over" and 'through" - could be what fuels kid's abilities and interest in math and science later on in school. And studies show that children learn to use more spatial language when playing with blocks than when not.
Useful Guidelines:
Print on cardstock. Laminate. Place on a key ring or in binder.
Place a hook near your Block Area/Center to hand the cards.
Provide additional objects such as: Loose Parts, toy vehicles, traffic signs, etc...
Take a photo of what your students build from different perspectives like: Helicopter view, street view, etc.. Share with them and discuss spatial awareness. This will help them see 3-D objects on paper and determine dimensions.
