Description

Have you ever been to a carnival and seen the booth where you have to guess the number of beans / marbles in a jar?

This lab takes that classic game and turns it into a science inquiry lab for your class!

Students first develop their own method to calculate the number of beads.

In the second part of this lab, they use the mass of the beads to solve the total number. This models how factories around the world use mass to calculate the amount of items that are shipped. You can bring in a shipping or counting scale into class to see how they work.

You can expand this into math, geometry, volume, exploring statistics, mean and standard deviation, and range. Students can also practice basic math and balance skills.

Key Words: Science, inquiry, lab, beads, jar, math, game, indirect observation, general science, observation, volume, mass
