Are you looking for a meaningful Advent activity to do with your students? The Jesse Tree is a chronological Bible story activity that gives your students a basic understanding of salvation history from creation to the birth of Jesus, This Advent tradition is a great way to keep your students focused on advent during this busy time of the year. I also included a bulletin board that I use to help my students visualize our journey from creation to Christmas.
This mini-unit contains the following components:
1. Teaching Guide (pdf): Teaching the faith can be a little intimidating at times, especially the first time you teach something new. This teaching guide provides background knowledge, step-by-step implementation, and tips for teaching.
2. The no-prep student PowerPoint presentation has 9 slides to introduce the Jesse Tree tradition and understanding of God's people waiting for a Savior, followed by 20 slides /ornaments. No teacher prep is needed here. Each slide is self-explanatory. The ornament slides each contain
A significant person/event from the Old Testament Summary of the importance of that person/event.
The 'Did you know?" provides students with some trivia.
The 'think question" asks students to make a connection to themselves. This is the most essential part of the activity! I am always so amazed at how thoughtful my students can be when answering these questions.
3. The Student Recording Sheet (pdf) is where students will document their learning by drawing the ornament, writing a short summary, and answering the short personal reflection questions.
4. The Bulletin Board (pdf) provides a classroom visual of your journey toward Christmas. The title, tree, and 20 ornaments are provided. Put up the words and the tree to start and add the ornaments as you do them.
Please Note: There are MANY versions of the Jesse Tree tradition. None are right or wrong, just different. This one does not correspond to the readings of the day but rather chronologically moves through the Old Testament. This resource is easily adaptable to the number of instructional minutes you have. You can do more than one ornament a day or skip over some as long as you proceed chronologically. The scripture reference is provided for you but the actual scripture is not included. Instead, I have included a student-friendly summary.
