Description
Use this back-to-school lab safety diagram / modeling activity to help students visually learn where 10 important safety items are in the science classroom. This was a great last-minute lesson epiphany idea that turned out better than expected! I was able to get great insight into student thinking, temperament and modeling skills at the beginning of the year all while teaching students where important lab safety items were around my room!
Teachers may choose to use this activity to observe:
Student modeling & diagram skills
How do students decide to write and label the objects around the room?
Do they choose to write out the full label or use a number instead?
Do they attempt to include other objects around the room?
How accurate is the diagram
Student Temperament:
How much effort is given?
Spatial intelligence & observation skills:
Recognizing and understanding the position of objects relative to themselves. using and developing a map/diagram
NGSS Science and Engineering Practices
Developing and using models.
