Description
Make the perfect Mother's Day / Día de la Madre gift without too much hassle this year. This Mother's Day poem activity allows your students to express their love and appreciation for their moms while using figurative language to write an ode style poem.
Requires minimal teacher prep: just print copies for your class! Use the included mini anchor charts to review similes, metaphors, onomatopoeias, hyperboles, personification and alliteration with your 3rd, 4th or 5th grade students in either English or Spanish.
After identifying examples of figurative language in the teacher example poem (included), students will write their own poems (both teacher and student instructions included).
Comes in both English and Spanish versions, as well as color and black and white.
Here's what's included:
- Figurative language poster
- Teacher instructions
- Student instructions
- Example poem
- Student publishing pages (8 options - mom, grandma, step-mom, aunt, dad, someone special, you, blank)
- Póster de lenguaje figurado
- Instrucciones para el profesor
- Instrucciones para el estudiante
- Poema de ejemplo
- Páginas de publicación (8 opciones - mamá, abuela, madrastra, tía, papá, alguien especial, ti, en blanco)
How to use this:
- Review figurative language by showing students the mini anchor chart
- Show example poem and have students find the examples of figurative language used in the poem
- Give each student a copy of the Student Instructions checklist
- Student write a rough draft of their own poem on a piece of notebook paper
- Student copy the final draft of their ode onto one of the publishing pages
This lesson is ideal for teachers who need a simple, yet meaningful gift idea for their students to use this Mother's Day, but at the same time want their students to be practicing academic standards. Can be completed in approximately 1 hour.
*Student instruction checklist is great for language learners and keeping students on task.
