Description

MythBusters is a very popular American television show. Each episode focuses on two or more common myths or beliefs and tries to scientifically determine if the myth is true or false. If it is false then the myth is "busted." The idea of testing and busting myths can easily be applied to the explanations for natural events the ancient Greeks gave in their famous stories.

In this activity students read summaries of three Greek myths that sought to explain natural events but have been busted by modern science (and read the truth behind them).

Students then complete a two-fold card project (see the Preview) where they investigate another Greek myth (suggestions provided) that attempts to explain a natural phenomenon, report and illustrate what the Greeks believed, and then do the same for the modern scientific explanation. They become MythBusters themselves! I have included several student examples to help both you and your students get started and an eight-point rubric that allows the teacher to easily grade the final assessment for both text quality/accuracy and images chosen and drawn.
