Description

Jeanette Winter hints at the beauty, danger, and hope of Afghanistan in her thoughtfully crafted Nasreen's Secret School: A True Story from Afghanistan. Her illustrations employ vibrant color in an attempt to capture the story's setting, clothing, feeling, and community.

Dark clouds hang over the ancient city of Herat after 'the soldiers came and changed everything." Nasreen's father was abducted and her mother left home to search for him. From then on, she never spoke a word. 'She never smiled. She just sat, waiting for her mama and papa to return." Her grandmother takes Nasreen to a secret school for girls. In time, it gives Nasreen friendship and knowledge. This story takes place sometime between 1996-2001.

This story is read aloud online by Ms. Reis.
