Description
Get students excited about starting the new semester with this New Year's Resolution 2025 activity and writing prompt designed for middle and high school ELA students. This New Year's Resolution worksheet (digital & printable) was created with ESL / ELL students in mind to help them with goal setting for the new year & building confidence this 2025!
The purpose of this activity is for students to reflect on their school year so far, and create achievable academic and personal goals for the second semester of the school year.
This 7 step activity asks students to practice:
- Gratitude and self-reflection
- Identifying their strengths and achievements
- Set specific academic and personal goals
- Create actionable plans for success
- Develop self-compassion and resilience
What's included:
- Clear instructions for each section
- Structured reflection prompts
- Goal-setting framework
- Success visualization exercise
- Self-compassionate letter writing activity
- Grading rubric
Created for ALL learners: This activity is structured to ensure all students are successful: Both the digital and printable versions are created step-by-step so that students with diverse learning needs as well as ESL / ELL students find success. As well, the lengthier writing task (words of encouragement letter to self) include optional topics to focus on to ensure students are supported through the writing tasks should they struggle with what to write.
My students enjoy this activity because they have the opportunity to reflect on the positive experiences that they have had so far this school year while also creating New Year's resolutions that focus on their intentions for semester two.
Social Emotional Learning Activity: As well, students reflect on their struggles and find the "letter to themselves activity" very supportive of helping them manage negative experiences.
Have your students complete this activity the first week back from winter break to set the tone for second semester.
What you will love about this activity...
You will get to know your students in a new way: Students take this New Year's Resolution activity seriously since it is related to their personal lives and this makes it a really meaningful activity in my classroom.
You will love reading your students' responses once they are finished because you learn so much about who they are and how they are feeling about their school year.
Use the goal setting section of this activity to check in with your students throughout the semester to see how they are doing on achieving their goals. This is a great assignment to hold onto for your students and have them revisit it halfway through the semester as well as near the end of the semester.
This activity can be used as a meaningful ready-to-teach sub plan if needed. This product was designed on Google Docs. and Google Slides and includes a digital and printable version.
