Nutty Squirrel Directional Word Game
Fun Speech Therapy game for speech delayed kiddos and others learning directional words!
Nutty Squirrel has gone out looking for nuts and can't find his way home! Help him get home by setting up your game board to match one the game cards and following the directions to get him home! Try to get the squirrel and the nuts back to the tree but watch out for puddles and the hungry fox!
Parents/Teachers: This game is meant to help young children or those with special needs learn and understand directional words as well as counting. The game is simple, but emphasizes the use of the words: Forward, Backward, Left, and Right. (Game pieces to not move diagonally). When these words pop up in BOLD on the game cards, make sure to emphasize them when reading the card to your child. A simple extension of this activity would be to have your child choose how to set up the game board and tell you how to get the squirrel home. This would encourage them to speak more, and use the words they are learning as well as practice problem solving and planning ahead.
Instructions:
1) Print off all pages. Cut out squares and cards on pages labeled "Cut Out". Laminate cards and squares and your game board for durability if you wish. If laminating, you can use Velcro dots on your game board to keep the pieces where you put them.
2) Choose a game card. Place the squirrel, tree, and obstacles on the game board so that it matches the image on the game card.
3) Read the directions on the game card to your child, or help them read it if they can and ask them to move the squirrel on the game board accordingly to get him to his tree! (Only the squirrel and the nuts move.)
