Unit Description:
Oedipus at Colonus is the final play in Sophocles' Theban Trilogy, focusing on the last days of Oedipus, the former king of Thebes. After the tragic events of Oedipus Rex - in which he unknowingly killed his father and married his mother - Oedipus is exiled and wanders in self-imposed blindness. In his old age, he arrives at Colonus, a sacred area near Athens, where he seeks a final resting place.
At Colonus, Oedipus is granted protection by the Athenian king, Theseus, who respects the exiled king's plight. Oedipus's daughters, Antigone and Ismene, accompany him while his sons, Polynices and Eteocles, are at odds over the throne of Thebes. Polynices pleads for Oedipus's support in his struggle for power, but Oedipus refuses, instead cursing his sons for their betrayal.
The play concludes with Oedipus's death at Colonus, where it is foretold that his grave will bring blessings to the land that shelters him. Through his final transformation, Oedipus achieves peace, ending his long journey from a man cursed by fate to one who finds redemption and rest.
