Description

Objective: To present a polished, professional, research-based speech and podcast that links the real world to The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Driving Question: Does public punishment have a place in modern society?

Students will be looking at The Scarlett Letter and public punishment as they make personal and societal connections and begin researching modern forms of public punishment present in our society. Additional guidelines are included.

Personal Connection
This activity not only fosters creativity but also provides a safe space for introspection, allowing students to connect personally with the text.
A Symbol of Secrecy
Students will create a symbol to represent something that they would like to keep hidden. They will wear it one day to see what it feels like to be in a similar predicament.

Society Connection
Research
Students will research current public punishment that takes place in today's society.

Critical Thinking
Writing Analysis/Persuasive Speech
After conducting research, students will think about the pros and the cons and then pick a side. After writing a speech that follows a 5-paragraph essay outline, they will give their 2-5 minute speech.

Design/Create
Podcast
Students will create a podcast with information they have already collected.
Students should work with a partner who has opposing views.
This should not be an argument but could be a debate or a conversation.

Presentation
Present--Symbol & Podcast
Students will present the symbol and podcast to the class and possibly an administrator.
