Description

Looking for an engaging and comprehensive way to teach the water cycle, matter, and scientific argumentation in your middle school science classroom? Our Classic Phase Changes of H2O Demo Pack goes beyond a traditional lab packet to provide you with everything you need to make these challenging concepts crystal clear for your students. Our comprehensive resource pack includes a complete student lab guide, companion article and question set, 7 infographic phase changes posters, and a guided and 2 leveled CER (Claim-Evidence-Reasoning) scientific argument tasks with scaffolds to bring it all together.

➥ About The Ball & Ring Demonstration:

-This demo showcases the phase changes of water in a simple yet powerful way: A pie tin filled with ice is suspended above a beaker of water boiling on a hot plate, allowing students to easily observe the processes of melting, evaporation, and condensation.
-This demo makes it easy for students to understand the process of condensation, one of the most difficult parts of the water cycle to grasp.

➥ Lab Guide:

-Our lab guide is crafted with UDL principles in mind, with lots of visual supports and graphic organizers to ensure multiple entry points for all students.
-The guide includes step-by-step directions on how to set up the demonstration, a materials list, a place for students to identify the purpose of each material, a graphic organizer that helps them clarify where each phase change is happening and why.
-The analysis page helps students consolidate their learning by creating their own diagrams of the demonstration, annotating and correcting statements about phase changes, identifying examples of condensation in everyday life, and evaluating possible claims about the origin of the water droplets that formed on the bottom of the pie tin.
-A rubric is included for the Lab Guide, separate from the CER rubrics.

➥ CER Extension:

-The CER Extension includes two levels of CER tasks that ask students to use evidence and reasoning to identify and explain the origin of the water droplets that form on the bottom of the pie tin.
-An advanced version of the CER task is also provided, which asks students to identify and explain misconceptions about the model.
-Each level includes a graphic organizer, lined page with prompt, and aligned rubric.
Additionally, 4 CER support posters are included to help students craft their scientific arguments.
-These posters cover the parts of a CER, CER sentence starters, annotation guide, and evidence quality guide, and can be used with any CER tasks.

➥ Article & Question Set:

-Our article and question set helps students connect what they observed in the demonstration to phase changes in everyday life as well as in the water cycle.
-This resource includes an informative article and a set of questions that guide students to identify examples of phase changes, describe how they occur, and explain the role of energy in the process.

This resource is a must-have for any science teacher looking for engaging and effective ways to teach phase changes and scientific argumentation. With the comprehensive lab guide, well-crafted CER tasks, and informative article and question set, students will have multiple entry points to explore the fascinating world of phase changes.

Additionally, the included CER support posters and graphic organizers provide valuable tools to help students craft their scientific arguments with confidence. It's no wonder that The STEAM Queen herself has had two highly effective formal observations using this resource. Try it out and see the results for yourself!
