Description
Objective: Students will create a cover letter and resume of a planet of their choice in the first person narrative. The resume is to highlight the features, history and characteristics of a planet of their choice. Students will use the resume and cover letter template found in this resource to "apply" for a job at Solar System Inc. a prestigious local company looking to hire a new planet.
This project was a great hit with my middle school kids, but would be an even greater hit with high school students who are starting to enter the workforce. I have been working to make my science curriculum more relevant for my students and make connections to the world outside the classroom. After overhearing some of my students complaining after class how they wished school would prepare them for the "real world" I decided to make a project where students could practice formatting a resume/cover letter as a science project.
This research project has students explore the following topics on their chosen planet:
Unique characteristics
Geographical features
Atmospheric conditions
Location
Revolution and orbit patterns
Planet's natural satellites
How that planet was formed
This resource includes:
Project Overview and Organizer: Contains step by step directions for students to create their custom cover letter and resume. 2 pages.
Resume and cover letter templates. Students can fill these in after researching their chosen planet. 3 pages.
Rubric for project. Includes space for teacher note/feedback. 2 pages.
"Interview" Presentation questions. On the last day of the project students will interview for a job at Solar System Inc. Interviewers will ask each applicant specific questions about their planet and record their responses. Includes a post interview reflection question. 5 pages.
Student Organizer/Planning Checklist Sheet. 2 pages.
Teacher notes on project presentation. 2 pages.
How can I utilize this resource in my classroom?
This product can be used as a project based summative or formative assessment, online activity during class, as a homework assignment or as a sub plan.
The resources included in this file are formatted as Word documents so they may easily be edited to suit the needs of your classroom. I also included a pdf version of each resource.
